The day before I had organised a rental car so that I could properly explore Dallas in the short time that I was there. They had offered free pick up from the airport, though that seemed too hard for them. After being on hold for about 10 minutes, they found it easier to just hang up. I then called back twice more, only to be hung up on again. They also then required that I order my driving history from South Australia, that was to be faxed to me. Considering the quality of the service, I called it a day with this whole rental business, and stuck to good ol' public transport.
The only hostel was unfortunately way out of downtown Dallas, and while it boasted great public transport, you still had to walk about 15 minutes to get to the station. This is generally fine, but I'm not too keen on walking through strange neighbourhoods by myself at night.
Eventually, I managed to make it to downtown, and it was definitely worth it. They boast some beautiful old buildings and I was enjoying the walk around very much! I visited the JFK memorial, the Old Red Museum (a building that so famously has burnt down multiple times), and explored the arts district briefly. I got to visit where JFK was assassinated, and even managed to run into a walking tour guide, who offered to show me around for free for a while. On a side note, Texans are ridiculously nice! He shared with me his theory as to why JFK was shot, believing that it was a conspiracy by multiple people and that there was more than one gunman; even taking me to the spot he believes the second shot likely came from. I was very glad to have run into him. While I do not have any theories myself, I doubt I would have gotten the same information if I was just walking around by myself.
